AJ West studied English Literature at University before embarking on a career as a broadcast journalist. From Global Radio to Radio 1, he joined BBC Radio 2 in 2010, producing the Arts Programme with Claudia Winkleman and the Jeremy Vine Show.

In 2012 he moved to BBC Northern Ireland, where he presented the breakfast news until his departure having discovered the true story of William Jackson Crawford which captured his imagination, he turned it in to a Sunday Times bestseller and award-winning novel, The Spirit Engineer. In 1914 William, a respected engineer, finds himself investigating the young spiritual medium, Kathleen Goligher. A sceptic at first, William soon begins to hear familiar voices from his troubled past. In the wake of the doomed Titanic, amidst the terrors of World War I and under the watchful gaze of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini, William must discover the truth.
