Calendar celebrates Yeovil’s past

Released On 4th Oct 2017

Fascinating photographs of Yeovil, from SSDC's extensive photo collection, have been used in the calendar which is now in the fifth year of production.

Joseph Lewis, Co-ordinator at SSDC's Community Heritage Access Centre, explains: "In choosing the pictures, we have tried to reflect change over time, perhaps most evidently in the January image of Yeovil's High Street in 1920, before the construction of King George Street.

"The August image, taken slightly further along in High Street shows fashions and car registrations from the early 1970s.  Local people may enjoy looking for a person or a vehicle that they recognise, in this picture".

Other pages show staff of the Wests Department Store looking after injured soldiers in 1918, with the Vicarage Street Methodist Church in the background, and the Percy Winsor Massey Ferguson tractor display at the 1958 Yeovil Show.

The December illustration completes the year with a glimpse inside a Plummer Roddis Ltd interior Christmas display of the 1950s.  Plummer Roddis was a department store.

The calendars are £6 each and all profits go towards maintaining the collections at SSDC's Community Heritage Access Centre.
