Five top things to do at Yeovil’s 5 star Best Park over the coming months

Released On 23rd Apr 2018

eovil Country Park was recently awarded a 5 star Best Park 2017 award from the RHS South West in Bloom, so we thought we'd help you enjoy the wonders of the site by suggesting some things to do in the coming months:

Explore the magical woods of Ninesprings during May to discover woodland wildflowers blooming, including native bluebells and wood anemones.

The Fairy Tale Trail comes to Yeovil Country Park during Half Term in May (Tuesday 29 May - Friday 1 June). Pick up a trail leaflet from the Ninesprings Café for just £1 and be amazed by the magic of the site.

Walk around the new area of Yeovil Country Park at Riverside. The area is accessible from Birchfield Car Park at Lyde Road - head over the footbridge at the bottom of the steep slope and visit this area of floodplain meadow in June and July to see butterflies, hovering kestrels and if you're lucky, an otter in the River Yeo.

On Saturday 14 July, join the Countryside Rangers to decorate the springs in Ninesprings and celebrate summer at the Well Dressing event. This free drop in event will take place between 2.00pm - 5.00pm and will conclude that evening when the Valley Garden springs will be lit up by candlelight between 7.00pm and 9.30pm.

Between 20 July and 12 August, join in with the Butterfly Conservation's Big Butterfly Count. This is a great family activity and you can download their free app and walk the meadows in Ninesprings, Penn Hill and Riverside to record which species you see. Pop into Ninesprings Café afterwards to enjoy some well-deserved refreshments and discover the history and hidden wildlife of Yeovil Country Park using the recently installed information panels.

South Somerset District Council owns and manages the Yeovil Country Park site and other sites across South Somerset, including Ham Hill Country Park and Chard Reservoir. You can find out more about what you can do and take part in across all the sites at www.southsomersetcountryside.com.

Councillor Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at South Somerset District Council said, "We're proud that Yeovil Country Park achieved the fantastic 5 star Best Park 2017 award and we want as many people as possible to come and enjoy the wonders of the site. There's plenty for people to do, including visiting the play park on a warm day or going for a stroll across all parts of the site. There are so many different parts of Yeovil Country Park, all of which have a unique character and charm."

Once you have enjoyed the delights of Yeovil Country Park, why not rest your feet at the Ninesprings Café and enjoy a hot or cold drink? The Café welcomes well-behaved dogs, but please ensure they are kept on a lead at all times.
