For the tenth year running, South Somerset District Council staff have delved through the extensive South Somerset Heritage Collection to bring you the South Somerset Heritage calendar 2023.
The calendar features a series of photographs and associated objects celebrating South Somerset’s inventions, mementos, and local history.
This year’s theme commemorates the Queen’s Coronation 70 years ago which have reflected with objects and photographs ranging from the Coronation Hotel to a teacup inscribed “present from Yeovil”.
2023 also commemorates 90 years since two Westland aircraft from Yeovil allowed the first photographic flight over Mount Everest. The calendar features an image of a propellor from a lighting generator on one of the aircraft.
Joseph Lewis, Heritage Co-ordinator, says, “There are some exciting new additions to our collection which have made their debut in this year’s calendar. Make sure to look out for the Rose Queen in Yeovil’s Carnival and Yeovil Girl’s School to get a glimpse at historic Yeovil.
Portfolio Holder, Councillor Mike Best, comments, “It is great to reflect on the amazing heritage South Somerset has to offer. The calendar reflects the highlights over many years and shares memories and stories from the years gone by. South Somerset Heritage Collection is a great insight to our rich history and I would recommend a visit.”
South Somerset Heritage Collection is Yeovil’s hidden gem, a secret museum tucked away at Lufton Trading Estate full of mysterious objects and artefacts all about South Somerset.
The collection has 30,000 fascinating objects and 6,000 photographs ranging from a Roman mosaic to a recent Yeovil Town football programme. The collection highlights include a significant sample of gloves and gloving tools, notable costume and fine art collection, the Petter / Westland inventions and St.Ivel dairy industry…just to name a few!
By combining our photographs and objects we aim to illustrate the breadth of the collection we care for at South Somerset Heritage Collection and peak the interest of enthusiasts to visit the collection.
Our friendly and helpful Heritage team provide lectures, resources and advice for community groups. We are also happy to organise tours, individual visits and access for researchers.
