Yeovil Samaritans to warm up Blue Monday

Released On 17th Jan 2020

Samaritans of Yeovil, Sherborne & District is encouraging people in Yeovil to beat the winter blues by getting together for a warming cuppa for Brew Monday.

This year Brew Monday is on the 20th, the third Monday in January which is typically known as ‘Blue Monday’ for being the most difficult day of the year.

The Branch is planning to turn the blues into brews, by bringing the community together over a cup of tea.

Branch volunteers will be serving up teas, coffees, cakes and company galore from a gazebo outside their new Centre, Morley House, 26, West Hendford from 10am to 1pm on 20th January.

Brew Monday Event Organiser, Margaret Grundy said. “Having just moved into West Hendford, we are keen to get ourselves out into the community and Brew Monday offers an ideal opportunity for us to share some warmth with local residents.  Anyone is welcome – be they a passer-by, a local resident, a local business or a college student.’

Our purpose is also to encourage members of the community to look out for those around them and host their own events, not just on Brew on Monday but any day of the year.  All they need is a kettle, some mugs a supply of tea and a listening ear –a simple combination of ingredients that everyone has but that can make a huge difference to someone’s life. ‘

Now firmly installed in its new home, Morley House, Yeovil Samaritans currently has 130 volunteers helping to answer some of the millions of calls for help that Samaritans responds to every year from people going through a difficult time.

‘It’s great to have the support this year of the UK’s much-loved tea brand PG Tips’ continued Margaret.  ‘Nationally, they are helping to get the ‘share the warmth’ message out there and encourage the nation to come together and share a cuppa with someone who may be lonely. They’ve also supplied us with thousands of twin tea bags to hand out at Brew Monday events.’

Could you be a Samaritans volunteer?   If you’d like to be part of the story, why not come along to one of our monthly open evenings which take place on the first Wednesday of every month at 7pm at our Centre, Morley House, West Hendford?  There’s no need to pre-book, just turn up.  Alternatively, you can call our information  line on  01935 478746, email recruitment@yeovilsamaritans.org.uk or visit our website at https://www.samaritans.org/branches/samaritans-yeovil-sherborne-and-district.’
